Synth-pop duo Hurts has topped a poll of music fans who gave the best performance at this year's Glastonbury Festival, beating the likes of Beyonce Knowles and Coldplay.
Manchester-based Hurts who will perform at Positivus Festival on Friday, July 15th, took the top spot in the poll - which posed the question: 'Who stole the show at Glastonbury?' - with a rating of 8.13 out of a possible 10 points.
Veteran group U2 and relative newcomers The Wombats fell into second and third place, with 7.41 and 6.79 points respectively, while Chris Martin's band Coldplay came in at four in the poll, just ahead of Two Door Cinema Club and Beyonce.
Pulp, Queens Of The Stone Age, Elbow and Kaiser Chiefs rounded off the top ten in the poll, with popular bands like Mumford & Sons, Chemical Brothers falling just outside the top ten performances according to NME readers.
The music magazine ran a poll in June asking readers to vote for the best ever Glastonbury performance, which last year's Positivus headliners Muse won for their 2004 headline set on the Pyramid Stage.
The visitors of this year’s Positivus`11 festival are going to be pleased to discover that Nordea has provided them an easy access to funds – two ATMs of Nordea will be available to public throughout the event. One of them will be located within the confines of the festival venue, the other – outside it.
The organizer of Positivus festival Ģirts Majors comments the fact, “Having ATMs within the territory of the festival is going to be one of the most positive surprises, as it is not an infrequent thing that you find yourself running out of the cash taken along faster than expected. This practice is a novelty for Latvia, but already being used in the most popular European festivals, so that the visitors would not have to worry where to dig up cash. Together with Nordea, we take this to a new level for us.”
Nordea Head of Retail Jana Strogonova reveals, “The idea of setting up an ATM for Positivus festival occurred to us last year already. We are happy that we managed to make it come true and get even closer to our customers and visitors of the event. The nearly seven metre tall ATM structure will be the peak point on the main street – what we are going to provide is not merely an ATM featuring the traditional functions, it also will be a convenient and visible meeting spot.”
We would like you to be reminded that you can still obtain entry tickets to Positivus`11 in Nordea ATMs, and at a good price, besides. Festival tickets will also be available on spot, during the event. By now, each day we see a number of tickets being bought via Nordea ATMs. This service is available to customers of any bank without an extra commission fee being charged.
During this year, Nordea has considerably expanded its ATM network. Nearly 400 ATMs are available to Nordea customers in Latvia, in Riga as well as in rural regions.
Unfortunately Danish indie rock band The Kissaway Trail have cancelled their appearance at this year's edition of Positivus Festival due to recording commitments.
Create a unique, unusual and comfortable chair, take part in the competition and go to the most positive event of this summer – Positivus Festival. The British Council and Positivus will give away free tickets to the festival up to 30 best designers of an “unusual” chair.
Participants of this competition must use only eco-friendly and recycled materials, for example, recycled PET bottles, pallets, tyres or old furniture. The chair must hold an adult's weight, however, considering a flight of imagination, there are some restrictions: the chair’s weight must not exceed 10 kg. Furthermore, it should be a handmade work, because simply painted chair will be disqualified. More information about the competition rules and regulations can be found on the British Council Creative and Cultural Economy homepage www.creativeeconomy.lv
“In the sheds and garages there are a lot of interesting and unusual things, which “waits” for their appearance on the big Positivus stage! Last year we had a great experience in organising the tent contest, therefore this year together with Positivus Festival we organise the contest which is available for everybody who has a creative imagination and skilful hands! The competition winners will get the tickets to Positivus Festival and have the possibility to take part in a creative workshop with British designers and young entrepreneurs Nick Rawcliffe from Rawstudio and Adam Fairweather from Re-Worked. British designers will create various objects of art from used at the festival PET bottles and glasses," – said Maija Udre, Young Creative Entrepreneurs program manager (the British Council Latvia).
Moreover, near the British Council’s tent and the festival entrance everybody will be able to get British groups’ song’s lyrics, which will be performing at the festival. The main aim of this activity is to popularize the free English language learning resource on the Internet from the British Council - LearnEnglish.
Finally, the poets from Latvia and the United Kingdom will be performing urban poetry slam for all visitors of the festival. Urban poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite their original work. After that these performances are judged by audience which chooses a winner. This competition distinguishes from others by the fact that poets are evaluated by their original work as well as their performance.

Austra, Glasser and King Charles are set to play on the two main stages of the festival on Saturday, July 16th. They join Editors, James, Hurts and many more on the line-up for the two-day festival.
Austra is a three-piece from Canada. Band leader Katie Stelmanis, part-Latvian, part-Canadian, is a classically trained musician with a tendency to use her mainly electronic compositions for neo-operatic flights of vocal fancy. Feel It Break, Austra's long-anticipated debut album, written primarily by Stelmanis and mixed by Damian Taylor (Björk, The Prodigy, UNKLE) was just released this week on May 17.
Glasser is the recording and stage name of the American singer songwriter Cameron Mesirow. Her experimental music blends densely layered electronic sounds with various acoustic instruments and her angelic voice. She is often compared with artists like Fever Ray, Björk, Bat for Lashes and Florence + the Machine.
Gloriously psychedelic and exploding with vibrant sounds King Charles can be alt folk to up-beat psyche-rock with a frequent nod to Africa. His songs contain striking lyrical prose that make them stand out from the crowd mostly dealing with universal themes such as love and sacrifice without sounding trite.
Other acts who have been confirmed today for the 5th edition of the largest music and arts festival in the Baltics, set to take place on July 15th - 16th in Latvia, include Pulled Apart By Horses, Frankie & The Heartstrings, Yoav and Dry The River. They join the previously confirmed James, Editors, Beach House, Hurts, OK Go, Chapel Club, Tunng, Fanfarlo, The Kissaway Trail and many more.
Set amid the beautiful landscape of coastal town Salacgriva, northern Latvia, Positivus Festival has maintained the unique charm generated right from its first year and keeps delivering an eclectic mix of musical genres and an inimitable atmosphere to the 20,000 festival goers passing through its gates each day.

For our fifth edition next year we’re looking forward to welcome back one of the previous years’ headliners.”
For the first time at Positivus Festival on July 17th artists from all Baltic States have a chance to measure up themselves in a fascinating competition. 8 teams consisting of 16 talented illustrators, designers, comic and street artists, will compete in an international PAINT CLUB tournament.
Within the interactive tournament artists in teams of two are going to compete against each other for the national title. The national contest consists of some preliminary rounds followed by one final in which the teams are running for the national title. Coloured paint markers and white canvases are the general basics of every tournament. The audience together with the judges will make the decision over victory or defeat. The winner qualifies automatically for the international competition in October in Berlin.
The fascination of the PAINT CLUB arises through the interaction with the audience, the battle between the different teams and through the cooperation and the strategy within the singular teams. The PAINT CLUB will take place in context of significant events of major public interest and offers therefore a first-class forum for the artist and all involved partners.

Scissor Sisters return with their third album, Night Work, today on the June 28th! Night Work is a dynamic album with a big heart and some killer dance moves. Scissor Sisters will headline Positivus Festival on July 17.
One of the biggest bands in the UK over the past decade, Scissor Sisters have been hard at work in studios in London, Bahamas and their home town of New York, and are ready to follow up on the phenomenal success of 2006’s #1 album Ta-Dah. That album was the third biggest seller of 2006, selling over 1.4 million copies in the UK alone and producing the single, I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’, also a UK #1.
Night Work is a dance record but it’s not all electronic. You can still hear the sound of a band spinning out together in a rehearsal room. “Night Work is really us boiled down to who we are. It feels quintessentially us,” says Jake Shears. The album was preceded by the lead single Fire With Fire on June 20.
It is the first time Scissor Sisters have worked with another producer; they recruited Stuart Price (The Killers, Madonna) to co-produce.
We're pleased to announce that Positivus Festival will feature a special Cinema tent showing a variety of feature films, shorts and animation. The Cinema tent is located in the dunes near the chill-out area so after the music’s done and its wind-down time, it’s perfect to go and crash in front of a film.
As in previous years we will be showing a rich mix of the best short films from around the world courtesy of Future Shorts, one of the leading and most innovative short film labels. We’re also having a special shorts program from Spanish Basks this year as well as classic feature films from world cinema including Black Cat, White Cat (1998) by Emir Kusturica and Eggs (1995) by Bent Hamer. Latvian animation programme will include the official selection of short film competition of Festival de Cannes 2010, To Swallow A Toad, as well as numerous other animation features and shorts.
As an extra bonus this year, there’ll be a lecture about the history of music video held in Latvian on Saturday, July 17th.
We are looking forward to entertaining you at Positivus Festival Cinema tent!
Happy Mondays were the leaders of the late-'80s/early-'90s dance club-influenced Manchester scene who immersed themselves in the club and rave culture, eventually becoming the most recognizable band of that scene.
The music relied heavily on the sound and rhythm of house music, spiked with '70s soul licks and swirling '60s psychedelia. Happy Mondays were one of the first rock bands to integrate hip-hop techniques into their music. They didn't sample, but they borrowed melodies and lyrics and, in the process, committed rock blasphemy.
With their second album, 1988's Bummed, Happy Mondays became British superstars, particularly Ryder. Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, released in 1990, marked the height of the band's popularity, creativity, and influence. In 2007, 15 years since their last record, the band (minus about half the original members, including guitarist Mark Day) released their fifth studio album, Uncle Dysfunktional.
Funk soul artist Lady Daisey has rocked from small smoked clubs to massive hip-hop festivals all around the world. Shes performance will be on friday night.
Her message is one of love and inspiration, soulfully presented over head noddin’ Batsauce beats. Singing since she was 5, Lady Daisey has developed a playful powerhouse style that’s sure to grab the attention and steal the hearts of everyone within ear’s reach.
Benji B is one of the UK's most respected DJs. Renowned worldwide for his radio shows and club sets alike, he's amassed a fanbase who have come to see him as a leader in the future and soulful music movement, mixing the genres of hip hop, house, soul, funk, dubstep, and more, seamlessly taking his audience from one genre to the next.
For the past seven years he's being doing his own two hour show on BBC 1Xtra playing the latest and greatest music from dubstep and hiphop to house and soul and everything in between while inviting some of the very best artists to the show for interviews and exclusive mixes ranging from Juan Atkins to J Rocc and Dorian Concept to Kode 9.
When 1Xtra launched in 2002 he was asked to present a show on Thursday nights. It soon became essential listening for music fans around the globe. Recently Benji made the move to Sundays and has recently been given an extra hour and will now broadcast from 10 pm until 1 am every Sunday night.
As a DJ it is easier to count the countries Benji hasn't DJ'ed in than the ones he has. Every weekend he is in a different part of the world and is one of the UK's most international specialist DJs, playing regularly in the USA, Japan, the Middle East, Asia and Australia as well as all over Europe.
Alongside his weekly BBC show on 1Xtra Benji has been running his club night Deviation Sessions in the East London's Gramaphone for almost two years. Each month he installs a bespoke soundsystem on which have played the likes of Flying Lotus, J Davey, Martyn and Skream to Moodymann, Dam-Funk and many more. It is now widely regarded as one of the very best club nights in London.
Tim West and school friend, Christian Hardy, are at the helm of The Good Ship. They’re joined by a variety of other Willkommen players including Jacob Richardson from Sons of Noel and Adrian, Will Calderbank from The Miserable Rich and Christian’s partner in the Leisure Society, Nick Hemming.
The concept of ‘the album’ was important to Tim, I’m not a participant in the MP3/Shuffle generation. I consciously wrote all the songs, as an album - they all had their place in this context to make an overall piece of art. Not just individual songs that got clumped together...
The Good Ship is the product of a five year labour of unconditional love. It’s a joyful celebration of life, or, as Tim puts it, wanting to be either in your 'happy place' or away from the shit of modern existence.
This philosophy extended to the creative process. Away from windowless city studios, The Good Ship was recorded in a variety of idyllic settings. Tim put members of the Willkommen family on a bus and drove them to places like Wales, Devon and Northumberland so that we could share in a holiday experience and get the creative flow going. These were deeply happy trips for all of us, unforgettable really, Chris concurs, and I'm pleased that there is what I hope to be a worthy record to show for that time.
As such, The Good Ship is blessed with an organic, natural and warm sound. Chris and I are both sceptical of clinically clean, over produced records, Tim elaborates, hence the reason you can hear us doing washing up in the back of some tracks. The old creaky farmhouses that we recorded in added to that 'roomy' sound. When looking for firewood in an old barn on the first day of the first recording session, I came across a really old kids’ drum kit. It looked crap. But we then used it for a few songs because it sounded great.
Manchester based Ten Bears are screaming fuzzy guitars and riotous synths. They are the B of the Bang. They are Prince, MGMT, and White Stripes and yet they are not. They are what they are and what they are is FuturePop and FuturePop is Ten Bears!
Despite not even having an album yet, they have played Glastonbury, The Secret Garden Party and this year's SXSW. Their debut single Braces is a perfect example of what they do; feel good up-beat indie synth-pop.
It’s been a long time in the making. Nearly all the songs have been recorded and self-produced using a small electronic box…either in mine or Jon’s bedrooms, living rooms, sheds, kitchens and bathrooms. After all the arranging, recording, editing, mixing, re-recording, re-editing, re-mixing, re-mixing again, post-production, mastering, and re-mastering we all feel proud and chuffed with what we’ve made! Lots of hard work and good luck have got us some great press and airplay in recent weeks, which means that the album will reach far more pairs of ears than we ever thought possible back when we started it. But far more crucial to our progress has been the tremendous support we’ve got from you folks all along, which has given us a belief in what we do, and the determination to keep doing it.
UNKLE will perform on the main stage of Positivus Festival on Friday. With its blend of electronic, hip-hop, dance and rock music UNKLE defies definition. UNKLE albums have featured collaborations with artists such as Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Mike D (Beastie Boys), Jason Newsted (Metallica), Badly Drawn Boy, Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Ian Brown (The Stone Roses), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack) and many more.
Meanwhile UNKLE have just relased their new album Where Did the Night Fall on May 10. For more information visit www.unkle.com
Headlining the I Love You stage are Sons of Noel and Adrian and Estonian indie-folk trio Ewert And The Two Dragons. The third biggest stage of the festival will also feature performances from Latvian artists El Mars, Mona De Bo, Martin Confused, Alise Joste, 100 White Souls, Tramplīni, Soundarcade and SPB. Estonian indie pop Bad Apples and winners of annual Open Mike competition
will also be performing over the weekend. With music playing until early morning, I Love You stage will be a distinctive event for anyone attending.
The line-up for the fourth edition of the festival this year will also include Stornoway, ASIWYFA (And So I Watch You From Afar), The Climbers, Kira Kira and more. For full line-up confirmed up to now please see the list below.
